Symphony No. 2 was composed in 1902 and published by Hamelle in 1903. It is dedicated to and was premiered by Charles Mutin, the famous organ builder, successor of Cavaillé-Coll. This symphony was praised by Debussy.

The OrganScore edition is made from the original edition, (2e Symphonie pour Grand Orgue par Louis Vierne, Editions Hamelle, 1903), on which a number of corrections were necessary. Most corrections have been identified by various pupils and friends of Vierne, and compiled by Rollin Smith (Louis Vierne, Organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Pendragon Press, Hillsdale, N.Y., 1999).
