Symphony No. 1 was composed by Vierne between 1898 and 1899, shortly before his appointment as organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The work was published by Pérégally & Parvy fils in 1899, then by Hamelle in 1903. It is dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant who played it to a small gathering in the Palais du Trocadéro and performed it later on his american Tour in 1904.
The OrganScore edition is made from the original edition, (1ère Symphonie pour Grand Orgue par Louis Vierne, Pérégally & Parvy fils, 1899, Editions Hamelle, 1903), on which a number of corrections were necessary. Most corrections have been identified by various pupils and friends of Vierne, and compiled by Rollin Smith (Louis Vierne, Organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Pendragon Press, Hillsdale, N.Y., 1999).
